Anji with children, without the meltdowns

Which of the county's family attractions actually work, at what age, and what to do when it rains.

Quick answer

Short answer: with children aged 4–10, do Zhongnan Baicaoyuan (train, animals, rides — the best wet-day answer) plus one bamboo workshop, and skip Yunshang Grassland unless the weather is clear. Hello Kitty Park is a half-day and worth it once. The panda house at the Bamboo Expo Park is the cheapest hour of the trip.

凯蒂猫家园Hello Kitty Park — Anji with children
Theme park

Hello Kitty Park

China's first Hello Kitty theme park, and the reason many Southeast Asian families choose Anji at all. The signature ride is a slide-style Ferris wheel built on top of a nine-metre building — the only one of its kind in Asia. Half a day is enough; a full day if your child is under eight.

中南百草原Zhongnan Baicaoyuan — Anji with children
Garden + animals + rides

Zhongnan Baicaoyuan

A 560-hectare park that combines a botanical garden, a zoo with white tigers and red-crowned cranes, and a valley fairground. A 3.86 km narrow-gauge train circles the whole thing — 38 minutes, and the single best thing to do with a tired four-year-old in the rain.

The five-stop study week

Anji as a classroom: adventure, immortals, archaeology and dinosaurs

The loop the county's own tourism account keeps pushing at Chinese families — and it translates perfectly for visiting ones. Adventure training, a heavenly town at 1,168 m, a real archaeological dig workshop, Asia-scale natural history, and a night under the galaxy. Five stops, ages 6 to 14, no theme-park queues.

01
OutdoorMix 国际户外探险基地

Courage test at the OutdoorMix adventure base

An 8,000 m² international outdoor-adventure base that opens the week with a proper confidence jump: a 15-metre climbing wall where the goal sits above and the start below, and a giant "magic net" — an aerial trampoline the size of a tennis court where children run, bounce and fall laughing. The lake session is the surprise: paddling in heats and finals like a real regatta, balance and crew-work disguised as play.

Best for ages 6+ · half day · life jackets and instructors included

02
仙侠镇·天上宫阙

A heavenly palace at 1,168 m

The poet Li Bai described a heavenly palace above the clouds 1,300 years ago; Xianxia town at the top of Yunshang Grassland is what it looks like built for real. Vermilion-and-gold gates appear and disappear in the cloud sea, a lotus pond seems to grow a lotus under every footstep, and a dragon gate stands above the cloud layer. More than 100 immersive performances run through the day and 200-plus costumed immortals walk the streets — the person who brushes past you may be flying on a sword, the one around the corner may be an old immortal mid-chess-game. The nine-coloured deer browses calmly at the Deer-Chanting Terrace.

安吉古城遗址公园·考古小学堂

"I restored an artefact in Anji" — a real dig site classroom

History class with no classroom. At the Anji Ancient City National Archaeological Site Park, children work beside the Bawudun royal tomb of the Yue state — a 2,500-year-old aristocratic burial mound archaeologists nickname the "Oriental earthen-stone pyramid", newly opened to the public in May 2025. In the country's first archaeology workshop for schoolchildren, each child cleans, matches, glues and fills a shattered pot — fingertips on clay pressed by a craftsman two millennia ago. The pot goes home; the sentence "I restored an artefact in Anji" stays longer.

Park entry ¥28 · workshop about 2 hours · ages 7+ (younger children pair up) · book ahead, limited bench slots

浙江自然博物院安吉馆

Standing under a 23-metre dinosaur

The Zhejiang Natural History Museum's Anji branch is among Asia's largest single natural-history buildings — 61,000 m² designed by David Chipperfield's studio as eight low buildings folded into the hills. Six halls, each a compressed epic: stand beneath a 23-metre Mamenchisaurus and a wall of dinosaur egg nests; walk Zhejiang's 2 billion geological years in one corridor; cross elevation bands in the ecology hall; face the suspended whale skeleton and the sperm-whale-versus-giant-squid diorama; and finish among the African and North American wildlife donated by the Behring foundation. Fully indoors — the best rainy-day block of the week.

Free with reservation · 3–4 hours · closed Mondays · 20 minutes from Anji town

05
贝壳帐篷·星空胶囊房

Sleep under the galaxy

The week ends the way Anji does nights best: no driving, just counting stars. Shell-shaped tents and capsule rooms in the Fantasy Valley sit under some of the darkest skies in eastern China — children fall asleep to insect song and wake to mist over the valley. For many visiting families this one night is the story their child tells for a year.

¥400–900 per family unit · book around the new moon for the darkest sky

One honest note: this loop is a lot for one day. We run it as two relaxed days — adventure base plus museum on the town side, the grass mountain and its town on a second day with the night camp. Tell us your children's ages and we will tell you which stops to drop.
Parent to parent

The things nobody puts on a brochure

What age does Anji work from?

Three and up. Under three, the grass mountain's altitude and the winding roads are more trouble than they are worth — a homestay with a garden and the Bamboo Sea boardwalk is a better toddler trip.

Are the roads a problem for car-sick children?

Yes. The last 40 minutes to Yunshang Grassland is continuous hairpins. Ask your driver to stop at the halfway village, and bring ginger sweets. Our drivers keep sick bags; most do not mention them until needed.

Is there anything for a rainy day?

Zhongnan Baicaoyuan (the train, the indoor animal houses), the bamboo-weaving workshop, and any homestay with a big sitting room. The grass mountain in cloud is atmospheric but you will see nothing.

Do homestays have cots and high chairs?

Some do, most do not. Tell us the ages and we will only shortlist places that can actually supply a cot, a high chair and a bath — this is the single most common thing that goes wrong with family bookings.

Travelling with children?

Tell us the ages and whether anyone gets car sick. We will pick the homestay with the cot and the flat garden, and put the driver on the gentler road.
