Four ways to spend your days in Anji

Written after watching several hundred guests over-plan and leave tired. Pick the version that matches your nights, not the one that sounds most efficient.

Quick answer

Short answer: book two nights. A day trip from Shanghai is possible — leave 06:30, back by 19:30 — but you spend six hours in a car for four hours on the mountain. Two nights gives you Yunshang Grassland, one bamboo workshop and the Bamboo Sea without queueing. Three nights adds the villages and the tea terraces; five nights adds a summit or a ski day and one day of doing nothing, which is the point.

Four routes we actually book

2 days · 1 night

Couples & friends · 情侣 / 朋友

Hangzhou in, Hangzhou out

  • Day 1Hangzhou → China Bamboo Sea (morning) → Deep Blue Plan, the mine-lake café (afternoon) → Xiaohangkeng for the sunset → homestay at Tianhuangping, stargazing after dinner
  • Day 2Yunshang Grassland — the whole day on the mountain — then drive home

The version we book most. Nothing here is rushed, and the two nights' views are completely different.

3 days · 2 nights

Families with children · 带娃家庭

Best from Shanghai or Hangzhou by car

  • Day 1Arrive → Zhongnan Baicaoyuan, a full day of animals and grass — stay in the county town
  • Day 2Bamboo Expo Park for the pandas (morning) → cycling through Yucun (afternoon) → county town or a village homestay
  • Day 3Tianyuan Jialebi or Hello Kitty Park — pick one, not both — then home

Three days is the honest minimum with small children: two parks in one day is the mistake everyone makes.

2 days · 1 night

Photographers & creatives · 拍照党 / 文艺青年

Built around light, not distance

  • Day 1The mountain viewing deck with a coffee (morning) → Deep Blue Plan (afternoon) → Xiaohangkeng for the evening camp → homestay in Shanchuan township
  • Day 2China Bamboo Sea at first light, before the coaches → the Jiangnan Tianchi mountain road by car → home

Two mist windows and one sunset, deliberately. If it rains, we swap Day 1 for the museums and try again.

2 days · 1 night

Summer water play · 夏天玩水

June–September only

  • Day 1Hidden Dragon Waterfalls (藏龙百瀑) — stream wading and pools — stay at Daxi
  • Day 2Yunshang Grassland, where the mountain is 5–8 °C cooler than the valley, then home

The route we run in a heatwave. Bring shoes that can get wet and a full change of clothes.

Day by day

The long versions, with timings and costs

Day trip 0 nights · 12–14 hours door to door

Anji in one day from Shanghai — possible, and honest about it

Best for: transit passengers with a long layover, or anyone already in Hangzhou.

Doable from Shanghai. Tiring. We sell it, but we tell people it is a long day.

06:30 · Leave Shanghai

Private car, 2.5 h. Sleep in the back — the driver handles the tolls.

09:30 · Yunshang Grassland

Ropeway up, meadow walk, cliff walkway. Three hours is enough if you skip the queues before 11:00.

13:00 · Lunch in the valley

Bamboo-shoot and free-range chicken at a farmhouse, ¥60–90 per person.

14:30 · China Bamboo Sea

Flat 1-hour boardwalk under the canopy. The film location everyone photographs.

16:30 · Coffee stop

Deep Blue Plan on the way out — the mine lake is 20 minutes from the expressway ramp.

19:30 · Back in Shanghai

Drop at your hotel or the airport.

What it costs: Car ¥1,100–1,400 + tickets ¥360 (Grassland entry ¥220 + cable car ¥140) + ¥58 (Bamboo Sea) + meals. Roughly ¥1,900–2,300 for two.
2 days · 1 night The one most guests should book

Two days: the grass mountain, then the bamboo valley

Best for: couples, first-time visitors, families with children over six.

Our default recommendation. One night in the mountains changes the whole trip.

Day 1 · 08:00 · Shanghai or Hangzhou → Anji

Straight to Yunshang Grassland, arriving before the 10:30 coach crowd.

Day 1 · 10:00 · Grassland, full day

Ropeway, meadow, cliff walkway, the hobbit cottages. Sunset from the ridge is the photo.

Day 1 · 18:30 · Homestay dinner

Bamboo-shoot stew, free-range chicken, local greens. Tell your host to cook what they eat.

Day 2 · 07:30 · Tea terrace before the mist lifts

Xilong or your homestay roof. Nothing to buy.

Day 2 · 09:30 · Bamboo-weaving workshop

Two to three hours with an inheritor. You leave with the basket you made.

Day 2 · 13:00 · Bamboo Sea boardwalk

One flat hour under the canopy, then a farmhouse lunch.

Day 2 · 16:00 · Drive back

Home or airport by 19:00.

What it costs: Car ¥1,400–1,800 (7-seat, two days) + homestay ¥600–1,200 + tickets + workshop ¥120–260 per person.
3 days · 2 nights The comfortable pace

Three days: add the villages and stop rushing

Best for: families, photographers, anyone flying in from Southeast Asia.

The trip people thank us for. Nothing is skipped and nothing is a queue.

Day 1 · Arrive · Yunshang Grassland

Afternoon on the meadow if you land at HGH by 11:00, otherwise a village walk and an early dinner.

Day 2 · Grassland + craft half-day

Full morning up top, afternoon bamboo workshop, evening in the homestay.

Day 3 · Villages + tea + mine lake

Yucun's bamboo-lined bike loop, Xilong tea terraces, Deep Blue Plan on the way out.

What it costs: Car ¥1,800–2,400 for three days + two nights ¥1,200–2,400 + tickets and workshops.
4–5 days Slow travel, or a hiking base

Four to five days: culture, a summit, and nothing at all

Best for: Europe/US long-haul, winter skiers, hikers, remote workers.

This is when Anji stops being a day trip and becomes a place you know.

Day 1–2 · The classic two

Grassland and bamboo valley as above.

Day 3 · Human side

Lingfeng Temple in the morning, Zhangwu village and the Wu Changshuo house in the afternoon, café lane at dusk.

Day 4 · A summit or a ski slope

Longwang Shan (1,587 m, the highest in northern Zhejiang) in green season; one of the three ski fields in winter.

Day 5 · Nothing day

Tea terrace, long lunch, boardwalk, early night — then a late-afternoon drive out.

What it costs: Car with driver ¥600–900 per day, or ¥2,600–3,600 for five days. Add guide ¥500–600 per day if you want commentary.
Prices in these plans are 2026 indications for two travellers sharing a car. Solo travellers should compare against the rail option on the transport page — it is genuinely cheaper and we say so.
