Tested, not just visited

Field tests and guest reviews side by side — what each place actually costs, what annoyed us, and who it suits. Scores are ours, dates are real, and nothing here is paid placement.

Quick answer

Our editorial team visits and pays for every place on this site. The scorecard rates six headline attractions on value, crowds at the worst hour, access, suitability for children aged 5–12, and whether the day still works in rain. Best all-round for families: Yunshang Grassland (4.2/5) and the bamboo weaving workshop (4.8/5). Most overrated for the money: the mine-lake café at ¥68 a coffee. The traveller quotes below are real public reviews of Anji the destination, quoted from TripAdvisor and Trip.com with author, platform and date — and the mixed ones stay in.

Scorecard · 2026 season

Six places, five honest criteria

5 = excellent, 3 = acceptable, 1 = avoid. Crowds is scored at the worst hour we experienced, so a famous place can still score badly here.

How to read this: Every entry above is a trip we paid for ourselves, on the date shown, with the amount we actually spent. Scores are ours, not aggregated from other platforms: value means what you get for the ticket price, crowds is measured at the worst hour we experienced (5 = empty, 1 = unbearable), access covers the last 30 minutes of travel and the walking involved, kids is suitability for ages 5–12, and rain plan means whether the day still works in bad weather. Nobody pays to appear here, and a low score is published the same as a high one.
Field tests

Five days we paid for ourselves

Each entry names the date, the amount spent and the part we would not repeat.

11 Oct 2026 · Saturday 4.2/5

Yunshang Grassland on a peak Saturday

We paid: ¥360 all-in (¥220 entry + ¥140 cable car) · ¥60 lunch on the meadow · ¥45 parking

What worked. Arriving at 15:30 was the whole trick: the cable car queue was 6 minutes, the meadow was half empty, and the lantern town lit up at 18:10 while everyone else was queuing to go down.

What did not. Between 10:30 and 13:00 the base station was genuinely unpleasant — 40-minute queue, no shade, and two tour groups chanting into a microphone. The glass skywalk added a 25-minute wait for a 90-second walk.

Verdict. Worth it, but only if you accept the ticket is one day: go up early, do the cliff park first, and let the lantern town be your exit rather than your arrival.

20 Sep 2026 · Sunday 4.6/5

Shanghai → Anji by private charter, door to door

We paid: ¥1,300 for a 6-seat van, Hongqiao hotel to Shanchuan homestay

What worked. Left at 07:10, at the homestay by 09:55 with one toilet stop. Driver spoke workable English, had child seats when asked, and did not once suggest a jade shop.

What did not. The last 18 km is single-lane mountain road — two passengers felt queasy. Sitting in the back row is a bad idea on this route.

Verdict. The price is fair for what it removes: no station transfers, no taxi haggling with luggage, no 12:50-only bus.

16 Aug 2026 · Sunday 4.0/5

The ¥110 shuttle from Hangzhou East station

We paid: ¥110 per person, 09:00 departure

What worked. Left on time, dropped us at the Yunshang visitor centre at 11:20. For a solo traveller this is the cheapest sane way to arrive.

What did not. Seats are not assignable, the coach fills by 08:45, and there is no luggage compartment for large suitcases. From the drop-off you still need a ¥60 taxi to most homestays.

Verdict. Best value for one or two people with backpacks; poor fit for families with big bags.

5 Jul 2026 · Sunday 3.6/5

Deep Blue Plan, the mine-lake café

We paid: ¥68 including one coffee · ¥20 parking

What worked. The water really is that colour. Shade sails, cold brew, and a swimming-pool-blue edge that photographs exactly as advertised. 33 °C outside, comfortable inside.

What did not. ¥68 for a coffee is Shanghai pricing, seating is first-come and the lakeside benches go by 15:00. There is nothing else to do once you have taken the photo — plan 90 minutes, not an afternoon.

Verdict. Go for the image and one good coffee; pair it with Yucun village so the drive is not wasted.

17 May 2026 · Sunday 4.8/5

Bamboo weaving with a 71-year-old master

We paid: ¥180 per person, 2.5 hours, basket taken home

What worked. Genuinely the highlight for the children — splitting bamboo, then weaving a base, with a master who corrected grips without a word of English and a translator who kept it funny.

What did not. The workshop is unheated in winter and the sharp step is adult-only. Two people in our group of six gave up halfway and watched.

Verdict. Book it. It is the only thing on this list you can take home and use.

Destination word of mouth

What travellers say about Anji

Real, public reviews of Anji the destination — quoted verbatim from TripAdvisor and Trip.com with the author, platform and date. When our own guests start writing back, their words go on this wall too, unedited, next to these.

“Discovered a hidden summer retreat treasure in Anji. 38°C heat waves at the foot of the mountain, only 22°C up top. Half thrilling adventure, half magical healing. Sea of clouds, sunsets, fairy tale cottages, and ancient fantasy towns all included.”

Penelope HallTrip.com · Yunshang Grassland · Aug 2026 ↗

“Having checked off almost every park in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, thrill seekers must visit Anji Yunshang Grassland. The various high-altitude attractions are packed with excitement. Weekdays have few visitors, so there's almost no waiting.”

MalinEriksenTrip.com · Yunshang Grassland · Aug 2026 ↗

“Who would have thought! No need to travel far to Hengdian. At the top of Yunshang Grassland, there's a fairy-tale town. Spend the day enjoying thrilling aerial activities. When night falls and the lights come on, you instantly enter an ancient fantasy world.”

Etherealwhimsy3Trip.com · Yunshang Grassland · Aug 2026 ↗

“Clean fresh air and a wonderful climb. It's indeed a sea of bamboo trees! Anji is about 3 hours by driving from Shanghai and it's a nice place for a retreat from the busy city life. This is the venue where Lee Ang filmed Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”

★★★★☆

“Nice viewing, not too commercial. Visited during off season in December… Great views from the top of mountains and local villages. Path to the top of the mountain well kept, easy hike if you can handle steps… Lots of fun!”

wood7TripAdvisor · Bamboo Sea · Dec 2017 ↗
★★★★☆

“The highlight is to climb to the top and get a great view of bamboo 'sea' surrounding you. Mountains filled with just bamboos. 2 hours is more than enough to see everything. Lots of farmer house restaurants nearby where you can stop and their specialty bamboo dishes.”

xally85TripAdvisor · Bamboo Sea · Oct 2016 ↗
★★★★★

“Last visit was over 10yr ago. We have changed but the mountain hasn't, nor the green bamboos. Easy and enjoyable hike for a 5yr old. Farmer food is everywhere around, to test the freshness and authenticity of local food.”

★★★★★

“It is no wonder that Zhang Yimou chose this location for his movie. A natural experience. Well worth the trip!”

Where these come from: every quote is a public review of an Anji attraction, copied word for word from the platform page and trimmed only with "…" where length demands it. We quote the mixed and lukewarm reviews alongside the glowing ones — same rule as everything else on this site: nothing is edited to look better than it is.
Who travels with us

Markets we host, and what each one asks for first

Philippines & Indonesia

"Is it cool up there?" Yes — 5–8°C cooler, which is the whole point. Halal and prayer arrangements are the second question, and we plan for both.

Thailand & Vietnam

Short-haul weekend trips, food-led, photo-led. The cliff park and cliff-edge photos at Yunshang Grassland plus one café day is the winning combination.

Malaysia & Singapore

Family groups of 6–10, often three generations. We use 7-seat vans in convoy and keep walking distances short.

UK, Europe, Australia, US

Longer stays, deeper curiosity about bamboo craft and village life, and a strong preference for published prices before contact.
