Two golden weeks: Anji's money pines turn amber (Nov 10–25)
Every autumn Anji runs a two-week colour event that most international visitors have never heard of: the golden larch — in Chinese, the money pine (金钱松) — turns from green to pure amber, holds it for about a fortnight, then drops everything. The 2026 window runs roughly 10 to 25 November. Miss it and the whole show resets for a year; catch it and you are standing inside the best photo this county takes all season.
Start at Lingfeng. Lingfeng Buddhist temple sits in a old-growth stand at the county's north edge, the temple grounds are free to enter, and the money pines around the halls turn a shade deeper than anywhere else — monks' robes against amber needles, incense smoke catching the 8 a.m. light. Come before 09:30: tour buses from Hangzhou arrive after that, and the courtyard is small.
Second stop, Zimei mountain villa at dawn. The pond at Zimei mirrors a line of golden larch and dawn redwood so exactly that on a windless morning you shoot the reflection as the picture and the trees as the bonus. Sunrise is around 06:30 in mid-November; the pond light peaks in the half hour after. It is a 40-minute drive from Lingfeng, so either commit to one sunrise or split the two across two days.
Third, the metasequoia avenue at Hengtang. This one is a drive-through: a straight country road lined with dawn redwoods going rust-orange on both sides, free, no ticket, no gate. It pairs naturally with a white-tea-terrace stop in Xilong on the same loop — autumn is also the tail of the tea harvest's second flush, so the terraces are at their tidiest.
The honest caveat: this is a weather-dependent show and the county gives no refund for a windy week. A cold snap shifts the peak two or three days earlier; a warm autumn pushes it later; a single night of strong wind can strip a favourite stand overnight. We track the weekly foliage reports from the county's own channels and confirm colours the evening before your shoot — ask us before you fix dates, not after.
A working one-day loop from Hangzhou or Shanghai: Lingfeng temple for 08:00, Zimei pond for late-afternoon light, Hengtang avenue on the drive back, homestay in the bamboo slopes, and — if you still have energy — the lit-up Xianxia town at Yunshang Grassland for night two. Autumn is the season Anji locals quietly agree is the county's best: 20°C days, cold nights, no queues, and two weeks of amber worth planning a trip around.
