Two cable cars, one mountain: choosing the right Yunshang Grassland entrance
Yunshang Grassland now runs two independent cable cars at the same fare: the original Shanchuan line (navigate to the Yunshang Grassland Visitor Centre, Gaojiatang, Shanchuan township) and the newer Yucun line (navigate to the Yunshang Yucun Visitor Service Centre). Most wrong turns on this mountain are entrance mistakes made before anyone boards a gondola, so here is the difference in one page.
The Shanchuan cable car is the classic main entrance. Its top station lands right beside the highland meadow and the cliff park — walk out of the cabin and you are minutes from the swings, the via ferrata and the sky stair. Choose it when the rides are the point of the day, or when the group includes grandparents and small legs. What it costs you is access: from Shanghai or the Yucun side it is a 40-60 minute mountain-road detour, and on weekend afternoons that road crawls while the car park fills.
The Yucun cable car is the new line and the obvious choice if you sleep in or around Yucun village: about fifteen minutes from the homestays, no mountain road, and the top station is Xianxia town itself — the night-tour start point. But know its three rules before you buy. First, Xianxia town to the cliff park is a 25-35 minute ridge walk each way — call it an hour of stairs return, which quietly decides whether your group will enjoy the day. Second, the last ticket check up the mountain is 17:00; after that the ropeway takes nobody up. Third, the hard rule: whichever cable car takes you up must bring you down. Yucun up and Shanchuan down is not a thing, and neither is the reverse.
The two zones keep opposite hours, and that shapes the order of your day. The cliff rides run 09:00-18:30 and stop dead on time — the sky stair, cliff swings, via ferrata, high-altitude bike, cloud-sea walkway and crystal bridge are all inside the day ticket, and all of them go dark at 18:30. Xianxia town is walkable by day and peaks at night: the lanterns come on at 18:30 and the ancient-town evening, with costumed NPCs, live performances and the drone show, runs to about 21:00.
This is also where the cheap tickets bite. Platforms sell night-tour-only tickets that cover the lit town and nothing else — no rides, ever. If the cliff park is half the reason you are going, buy the full day ticket and ride up mid-afternoon instead: rides from about 16:00 to 18:15, walk back to the town for the 18:30 light-up, night tour until 20:20 or so, and the last cable car down right after. Do not cut it to the final gondola — times shift with the season and the weather.
The small print that completes the maths: entry is ¥220 for adults (three days, unlimited re-entry) plus ¥140 round-trip cable car — about ¥360 all-in, the same total as the summer 180+180 structure, just split differently since the 16 October price change. Children 1.2-1.5 m pay the ¥90 child entry plus the round-trip cable fare; under 1.2 m enters free but still rides paid. Parking is ¥20 per day at either visitor centre. The summit runs 5-8°C cooler than the valley, so pack a light jacket even in summer; wear closed shoes with grip because the ridgeline is stairs all the way; and in wind, fog or freezing rain the ropeway and the rides can pause at an hour's notice — check the morning bulletin before you drive up.
Our standard pattern for guests staying near Yucun: leave the homestay at 15:00, tickets and shuttle by 15:20, cable car up by 15:40, ridge walk to the cliff park for a 16:15-18:15 ride block, back to Xianxia town before the lights, night tour until 20:20, down the same cable car you came up. Three-day tickets make it better still: whatever you do not finish today waits for you tomorrow at no extra cost. If that sounds like a lot to thread, that is what we pre-book and time for our guests — the ticket never changes, only the order you do it in.
